{"reader_html":"<h1 class=\"chapter-heading\">2 Esdras<span class=\"chapter-label\">Chapter 9<\/span><\/h1>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"1\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,1,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">1<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">He answered me then, and said, Measure thou the time diligently in itself: and when thou seest part of the signs past, which I have told thee before,<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"2\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,2,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">2<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Then shalt thou understand, that it is the very same time, wherein the Highest will begin to visit the world which he made.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"3\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,3,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">3<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Therefore when there shall be seen earthquakes and uproars of the people in the world:<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"4\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,4,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">4<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Then shalt thou well understand, that the most High spake of those things from the days that were before thee, even from the beginning.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"5\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,5,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">5<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">For like as all that is made in the world hath a beginning and an end, and the end is manifest:<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"6\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,6,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">6<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Even so the times also of the Highest have plain beginnings in wonder and powerful works, and endings in effects and signs.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"7\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,7,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">7<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And every one that shall be saved, and shall be able to escape by his works, and by faith, whereby ye have believed,<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"8\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,8,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">8<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Shall be preserved from the said perils, and shall see my salvation in my land, and within my borders: for I have sanctified them for me from the beginning.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"9\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,9,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">9<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Then shall they be in pitiful case, which now have abused my ways: and they that have cast them away despitefully shall dwell in torments.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"10\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,10,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">10<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">For such as in their life have received benefits, and have not known me;<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"11\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,11,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">11<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And they that have loathed my law, while they had yet liberty, and, when as yet place of repentance was open unto them, understood not, but despised it;<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"12\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,12,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">12<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">The same must know it after death by pain.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"13\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,13,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">13<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And therefore be thou not curious how the ungodly shall be punished, and when: but enquire how the righteous shall be saved, whose the world is, and for whom the world is created.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"14\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,14,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">14<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Then answered I and said,<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"15\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,15,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">15<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">I have said before, and now do speak, and will speak it also hereafter, that there be many more of them which perish, than of them which shall be saved:<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"16\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,16,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">16<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Like as a wave is greater than a drop.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"17\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,17,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">17<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And he answered me, saying, Like as the field is, so is also the seed; as the flowers be, such are the colours also; such as the workman is, such also is the work; and as the husbandman ls himself, so is his husbandry also: for it was the time of the world.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"18\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,18,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">18<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And now when I prepared the world, which was not yet made, even for them to dwell in that now live, no man spake against me.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"19\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,19,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">19<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">For then every one obeyed: but now the manners of them which are created in this world that is made are corrupted by a perpetual seed, and by a law which is unsearchable rid themselves.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"20\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,20,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">20<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">So I considered the world, and, behold, there was peril because of the devices that were come into it.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"21\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,21,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">21<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And I saw, and spared it greatly, and have kept me a grape of the cluster, and a plant of a great people.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"22\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,22,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">22<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Let the multitude perish then, which was born in vain; and let my grape be kept, and my plant; for with great labour have I made it perfect.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"23\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,23,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">23<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Nevertheless, if thou wilt cease yet seven days more, (but thou shalt not fast in them,<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"24\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,24,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">24<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">But go into a field of flowers, where no house is builded, and eat only the flowers of the field; taste no flesh, drink no wine, but eat flowers only;)<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"25\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,25,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">25<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And pray unto the Highest continually, then will I come and talk with thee.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"26\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,26,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">26<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">So I went my way into the field which is called Ardath, like as he commanded me; and there I sat among the flowers, and did eat of the herbs of the field, and the meat of the same satisfied me.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"27\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,27,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">27<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">After seven days I sat upon the grass, and my heart was vexed within me, like as before:<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"28\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,28,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">28<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And I opened my mouth, and began to talk before the most High, and said,<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"29\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,29,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">29<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">O Lord, thou that shewest thyself unto us, thou wast shewed unto our fathers in the wilderness, in a place where no man treadeth, in a barren place, when they came out of Egypt.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"30\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,30,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">30<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And thou spakest saying, Hear me, O Israel; and mark my words, thou seed of Jacob.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"31\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,31,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">31<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">For, behold, I sow my law in you, and it shall bring fruit in you, and ye shall be honoured in it for ever.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"32\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,32,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">32<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">But our fathers, which received the law, kept it not, and observed not thy ordinances: and though the fruit of thy law did not perish, neither could it, for it was thine;<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"33\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,33,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">33<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Yet they that received it perished, because they kept not the thing that was sown in them.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"34\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,34,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">34<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And, lo, it ls a custom, when the ground hath received seed, or the sea a ship, or any vessel meat or drink, that, that being perished wherein it was sown or cast into,<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"35\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,35,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">35<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">That thing also which was sown, or cast therein, or received, doth perish, and remaineth not with us: but with us it hath not happened so.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"36\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,36,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">36<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">For we that have received the law perish by sin, and our heart also which received it<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"37\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,37,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">37<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Notwithstanding the law perisheth not, but remaineth in his force.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"38\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,38,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">38<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And when I spake these things in my heart, I looked back with mine eyes, and upon the right side I saw a woman, and, behold, she mourned and wept with a loud voice, and was much grieved in heart, and her clothes were rent, and she had ashes upon her head.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"39\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,39,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">39<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Then let I my thoughts go that I was in, and turned me unto her,<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"40\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,40,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">40<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And said unto her, Wherefore weepest thou? why art thou so grieved in thy mind?<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"41\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,41,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">41<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And she said unto me, Sir, let me alone, that I may bewail myself, and add unto my sorrow, for I am sore vexed in my mind, and brought very low.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"42\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,42,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">42<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And I said unto her, What aileth thee? tell me.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"43\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,43,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">43<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">She said unto me, I thy servant have been barren, and had no child, though I had an husband thirty years,<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"44\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,44,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">44<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And those thirty years I did nothing else day and night, and every hour, but make my, prayer to the Highest.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"45\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,45,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">45<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">After thirty years God heard me thine handmaid, looked upon my misery, considered my trouble, and gave me a son: and I was very glad of him, so was my husband also, and all my neighbours: and we gave great honour unto the Almighty.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"46\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,46,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">46<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And I nourished him with great travail.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"47\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,15,9,47,&quot;2 Esdras&quot;)\">47<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">So when he grew up, and came to the time that he should have a wife, I made a feast.<\/span> <\/p>\n<div class=\"bottom-nav\"><a href=\"\/apocrypha\/3\/15\/8\" class=\"nav-btn-lg nav-ajax\">&lsaquo;
