{"reader_html":"<h1 class=\"chapter-heading\">Exodus<span class=\"chapter-label\">Chapter 21<\/span><\/h1>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"1\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,2,21,1,&quot;Exodus&quot;)\">1<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">“These are the judgments which you shall place before them:<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"2\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,2,21,2,&quot;Exodus&quot;)\">2<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">If you buy a Hebrew servant, six years shall he serve you; in the seventh, he shall depart freely, without charge.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"3\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,2,21,3,&quot;Exodus&quot;)\">3<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">With whatever clothing he arrived, with the like let him depart. If he has a wife, his wife also shall depart, at the same time.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"4\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,2,21,4,&quot;Exodus&quot;)\">4<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">But if his lord gave him a wife, and she has borne sons and daughters, the woman and her children shall belong to her lord. Yet still, he himself will go out with his clothing.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"5\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,2,21,5,&quot;Exodus&quot;)\">5<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And if the servant will say, ‘I love my lord, and my wife and children, I will not depart freely,’<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"6\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,2,21,6,&quot;Exodus&quot;)\">6<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">then his lord shall make an offering for him to the heavens, and it shall be applied to the door and the posts, and he will pierce his ear with an awl. And he shall be his servant in perpetuity.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"7\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,2,21,7,&quot;Exodus&quot;)\">7<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">If anyone sells his daughter to be a servant, she shall not depart as a female servant is accustomed to go out.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"8\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,2,21,8,&quot;Exodus&quot;)\">8<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">If she displeases the eyes of her lord, to whom she had been delivered, he shall dismiss her. But he shall have no authority to sell her to a foreign people, even if he despises her.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"9\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,2,21,9,&quot;Exodus&quot;)\">9<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">But if he has betrothed her to his son, he shall treat her according to the custom with daughters.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"10\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,2,21,10,&quot;Exodus&quot;)\">10<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And if he takes another for him, he shall provide to the maiden a marriage, and clothing, and he shall not refuse the price of her chastity.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"11\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,2,21,11,&quot;Exodus&quot;)\">11<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">If he does not do these three things, she shall depart freely, without money.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"12\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,2,21,12,&quot;Exodus&quot;)\">12<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Whoever strikes a man, intending to murder, shall be put to death.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"13\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,2,21,13,&quot;Exodus&quot;)\">13<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">But if he did not lie in wait for him, but God delivered him into his hands, then I will appoint for you a place to which he must flee.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"14\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,2,21,14,&quot;Exodus&quot;)\">14<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">If someone murders his neighbor with deliberation, by lying in wait, you shall tear him away from my altar, so that he may die.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"15\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,2,21,15,&quot;Exodus&quot;)\">15<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Whoever strikes his father or mother shall die a death.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"16\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,2,21,16,&quot;Exodus&quot;)\">16<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Whoever will have stolen a man and sold him, having been convicted of the crime, shall be put to death.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"17\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,2,21,17,&quot;Exodus&quot;)\">17<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Whoever speaks evil of his father or mother shall die a death.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"18\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,2,21,18,&quot;Exodus&quot;)\">18<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">If men will have quarreled, and one of them has struck his neighbor with a stone or a fist, and he does not die, but lies in bed,<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"19\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,2,21,19,&quot;Exodus&quot;)\">19<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">if he gets up again and can walk outside on his staff, he who struck him will be innocent, but only if he makes sufficient restitution for his deeds and for the cost of the physicians.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"20\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,2,21,20,&quot;Exodus&quot;)\">20<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Whoever strikes his male or female servant with a staff, and if they have died by his hands, he shall be guilty of a crime.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"21\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,2,21,21,&quot;Exodus&quot;)\">21<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">But if he survives for one day or two, he shall not be subject to punishment, because it is his money.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"22\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,2,21,22,&quot;Exodus&quot;)\">22<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">If men will have quarreled, and one of them has struck a pregnant woman, and as a result she miscarries, but she herself survives, he shall be subject to as much damage as the husband of the woman shall petition from him, or as arbitrators shall judge.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"23\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,2,21,23,&quot;Exodus&quot;)\">23<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">But if her death will have followed, he will repay a life for a life,<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"24\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,2,21,24,&quot;Exodus&quot;)\">24<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, a hand for a hand, a foot for a foot,<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"25\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,2,21,25,&quot;Exodus&quot;)\">25<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">a scrape for a scrape, a wound for a wound, a bruise for a bruise.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"26\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,2,21,26,&quot;Exodus&quot;)\">26<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">If anyone will have struck the eye of his male or female servant, having left them with one eye, he shall release them freely, because of the eye that he has put out.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"27\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,2,21,27,&quot;Exodus&quot;)\">27<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Likewise, if he knocks out a tooth of his male or female servant, he shall similarly release them freely.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"28\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,2,21,28,&quot;Exodus&quot;)\">28<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">If an ox has struck a man or a woman with his horn, and if they die, it shall be stoned.
