{"reader_html":"<h1 class=\"chapter-heading\">Matthew<span class=\"chapter-label\">Chapter 14<\/span><\/h1>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"1\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,1,14,1,&quot;Matthew&quot;)\">1<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">In that time, Herod the Tetrarch heard the news about Jesus.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"2\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,1,14,2,&quot;Matthew&quot;)\">2<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And he said to his servants: “This is John the Baptist. He has risen from the dead, and that is why miracles are at work in him.”<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"3\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,1,14,3,&quot;Matthew&quot;)\">3<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">For Herod had apprehended John, and bound him, and put him in prison, because of Herodias, the wife of his brother.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"4\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,1,14,4,&quot;Matthew&quot;)\">4<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">For John was telling him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.”<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"5\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,1,14,5,&quot;Matthew&quot;)\">5<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And though he wanted to kill him, he feared the people, because they held him to be a prophet.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"6\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,1,14,6,&quot;Matthew&quot;)\">6<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Then, on Herod’s birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced in their midst, and it pleased Herod.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"7\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,1,14,7,&quot;Matthew&quot;)\">7<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And so he promised with an oath to give her whatever she would ask of him.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"8\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,1,14,8,&quot;Matthew&quot;)\">8<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">But, having been advised by her mother, she said, “Give me here, on a platter, the head of John the Baptist.”<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"9\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,1,14,9,&quot;Matthew&quot;)\">9<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And the king was greatly saddened. But because of his oath, and because of those who sat at table with him, he ordered it to be given.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"10\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,1,14,10,&quot;Matthew&quot;)\">10<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And he sent and beheaded John in prison.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"11\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,1,14,11,&quot;Matthew&quot;)\">11<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And his head was brought on a platter, and it was given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"12\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,1,14,12,&quot;Matthew&quot;)\">12<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And his disciples approached and took the body, and they buried it. And arriving, they reported it to Jesus.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"13\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,1,14,13,&quot;Matthew&quot;)\">13<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">When Jesus had heard it, he withdrew from there by boat, to a deserted place by himself. And when the crowds had heard of it, they followed him on foot from the cities.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"14\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,1,14,14,&quot;Matthew&quot;)\">14<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And going out, he saw a great multitude, and he took pity on them, and he cured their sick.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"15\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,1,14,15,&quot;Matthew&quot;)\">15<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And when evening had arrived, his disciples approached him, saying: “This is a deserted place, and the hour has now passed. Dismiss the crowds, so that, by going into the towns, they may buy food for themselves.”<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"16\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,1,14,16,&quot;Matthew&quot;)\">16<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">But Jesus said to them: “They have no need to go. Give them something to eat yourselves.”<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"17\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,1,14,17,&quot;Matthew&quot;)\">17<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">They answered him, “We have nothing here, except five loaves and two fish.”<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"18\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,1,14,18,&quot;Matthew&quot;)\">18<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">He said to them, “Bring them here to me.”<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"19\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,1,14,19,&quot;Matthew&quot;)\">19<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And when he had ordered the multitude to sit down upon the grass, he took the five loaves and the two fish, and gazing up to heaven, he blessed and broke and gave the bread to the disciples, and then the disciples to the multitudes.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"20\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,1,14,20,&quot;Matthew&quot;)\">20<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up the remnants: twelve baskets full of fragments.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"21\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,1,14,21,&quot;Matthew&quot;)\">21<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Now the number of those who ate was five thousand men, besides women and children.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"22\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,1,14,22,&quot;Matthew&quot;)\">22<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And Jesus promptly compelled his disciples to climb into the boat, and to precede him in crossing the sea, while he dismissed the crowds.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"23\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,1,14,23,&quot;Matthew&quot;)\">23<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And having dismissed the multitude, he ascended alone onto a mountain to pray. And when evening arrived, he was alone there.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"24\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,1,14,24,&quot;Matthew&quot;)\">24<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">But in the midst of the sea, the boat was being tossed about by the waves. For the wind was against them.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"25\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,1,14,25,&quot;Matthew&quot;)\">25<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Then, in the fourth watch of the night, he came to them, walking upon the sea.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"26\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,1,14,26,&quot;Matthew&quot;)\">26<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And seeing him walking upon the sea, they were disturbed, saying: “It must be an apparition.” And they cried out, because of fear.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"27\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,1,14,27,&quot;Matthew&quot;)\">27<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And immediately, Jesus spoke to them, saying: “Have faith. It is I. Do not be afraid.”<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"28\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,1,14,28,&quot;Matthew&quot;)\">28<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Then Peter responded by saying, “Lord, if it is you, order me come to you over the waters.”<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"29\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,1,14,29,&quot;Matthew&quot;)\">29<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And he said, “Come.” And Peter, descending from the boat, walked over the water, so as to go to Jesus.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"30\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,1,14,30,&quot;Matthew&quot;)\">30<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Yet truly, seeing that the wind was strong, he was afraid. And as he began to sink, he cried out, saying: “Lord, save me.”<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"31\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,1,14,31,&quot;Matthew&quot;)\">31<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And immediately Jesus extended his hand and took hold of him. And he said to him, “O little in faith, why did you doubt?”<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"32\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,1,14,32,&quot;Matthew&quot;)\">32<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And when they had ascended into the boat, the wind ceased.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"33\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,1,14,33,&quot;Matthew&quot;)\">33<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Then those who were in the boat drew near and adored him, saying: “Truly, you are the Son of God.”<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"34\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,1,14,34,&quot;Matthew&quot;)\">34<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And having crossed the sea, they arrived in the land of Genesaret.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"35\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,1,14,35,&quot;Matthew&quot;)\">35<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And when the men of that place had recognized him, they sent into all that region, and they brought to him all who had maladies.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"36\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,1,14,36,&quot;Matthew&quot;)\">36<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And they petitioned him, so that they might touch even the hem of his garment.
