{"reader_html":"<h1 class=\"chapter-heading\">Luke<span class=\"chapter-label\">Chapter 20<\/span><\/h1>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"1\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,1,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">1<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And it happened that, on one of the days when he was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the Gospel, the leaders of the priests, and the scribes, gathered together with the elders,<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"2\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,2,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">2<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">and they spoke to him, saying: “Tell us, by what authority do you do these things? Or, who is it that has given you this authority?”<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"3\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,3,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">3<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And in response, Jesus said to them: “I will also question you about one word. Respond to me:<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"4\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,4,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">4<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men?”<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"5\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,5,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">5<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">So they discussed it among themselves, saying: “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Then why did you not believe him?’<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"6\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,6,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">6<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">But if we say, ‘Of men,’ the whole people will stone us. For they are certain that John was a prophet.”<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"7\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,7,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">7<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And so they responded that they did not know where it was from.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"8\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,8,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">8<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"9\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,9,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">9<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Then he began to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard, and he loaned it to settlers, and he was on a sojourn for a long time.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"10\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,10,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">10<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And in due time, he sent a servant to the farmers, so that they would give to him from the fruit of the vineyard. And they beat him and drove him away, empty-handed.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"11\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,11,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">11<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And he continued to send another servant. But beating him and treating him with contempt, they likewise sent him away, empty-handed.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"12\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,12,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">12<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And he continued to send a third. And wounding him also, they drove him away.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"13\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,13,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">13<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Then the lord of the vineyard said: ‘What shall I do? I will send my beloved son. Perhaps when they have seen him, they will respect him.’<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"14\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,14,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">14<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And when the settlers had seen him, they discussed it among themselves, saying: ‘This one is the heir. Let us kill him, so that the inheritance will be ours.’<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"15\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,15,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">15<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And forcing him outside of the vineyard, they killed him. What, then, will the lord of the vineyard do to them?”<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"16\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,16,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">16<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">“He will come and destroy those settlers, and he will give the vineyard to others.” And upon hearing this, they said to him, “Let it not be.”<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"17\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,17,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">17<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Then, gazing at them, he said: “Then what does this mean, which is written: ‘The stone which the builders have rejected, the same has become the head of the corner?’<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"18\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,18,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">18<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Everyone who falls on that stone will be shattered. And anyone upon whom it falls will be crushed.”<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"19\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,19,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">19<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And the leaders of the priests, and the scribes, were seeking to lay hands on him in that same hour, but they feared the people. For they realized that he had spoken this parable about them.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"20\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,20,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">20<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And being attentive, they sent traitors, who would pretend that they were just, so that they might catch him in his words and then hand him over to the power and authority of the procurator.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"21\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,21,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">21<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And they questioned him, saying: “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach correctly, and that you do not consider anyone’s status, but you teach the way of God in truth.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"22\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,22,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">22<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Is it lawful for us to pay the tribute to Caesar, or not?”<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"23\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,23,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">23<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">But realizing their deceitfulness, he said to them: “Why do you test me?<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"24\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,24,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">24<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription does it have?” In response, they said to him, “Caesar’s.”<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"25\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,25,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">25<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And so, he said to them: “Then repay the things that are Caesar’s, to Caesar, and the things that are God’s, to God.”<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"26\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,26,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">26<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And they were not able to contradict his word before the people. And being amazed at his answer, they were silent.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"27\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,27,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">27<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Now some of the Sadducees, who deny that there is a resurrection, approached him. And they questioned him,<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"28\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,28,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">28<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">saying: “Teacher, Moses wrote for us: If any man’s brother will have died, having a wife, and if he does not have any children, then his brother should take her as his wife, and he should raise up offspring for his brother.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"29\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,29,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">29<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And so there were seven brothers. And the first took a wife, and he died without sons.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"30\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,30,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">30<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And the next one married her, and he also died without a son.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"31\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,31,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">31<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And the third married her, and similarly all seven, and none of them left behind any offspring, and they each died.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"32\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,32,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">32<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Last of all, the woman also died.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"33\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,33,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">33<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">In the resurrection, then, whose wife will she be? For certainly all seven had her as a wife.”<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"34\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,34,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">34<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And so, Jesus said to them: “The children of this age marry and are given in marriage.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"35\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,35,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">35<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Yet truly, those who shall be held worthy of that age, and of the resurrection from the dead, will neither be married, nor take wives.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"36\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,36,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">36<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">For they can no longer die. For they are equal to the Angels, and they are children of God, since they are children of the resurrection.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"37\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,37,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">37<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">For in truth, the dead do rise again, as Moses also showed beside the bush, when he called the Lord: ‘The God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"38\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,38,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">38<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And so he is not the God of the dead, but of the living. For all are alive to him.”<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"39\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,39,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">39<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Then some of the scribes, in response, said to him, “Teacher, you have spoken well.”<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"40\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,40,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">40<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And they no longer dared to question him about anything.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"41\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,41,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">41<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">But he said to them: “How can they say that the Christ is the son of David?<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"42\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,42,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">42<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Even David himself says, in the book of Psalms: ‘The Lord said to my Lord, sit at my right hand,<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"43\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,43,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">43<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">until I set your enemies as your footstool.’<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"44\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,44,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">44<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Therefore, David calls him Lord. So how can he be his son?”<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"45\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,45,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">45<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Now in the hearing of all the people, he said to his disciples:<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"46\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,46,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">46<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">“Be cautious of the scribes, who choose to walk in long robes, and who love greetings in the marketplace, and the first chairs in the synagogues, and the first places at table during feasts,<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"47\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,20,47,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">47<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">who devour the houses of widows, feigning long prayers.
