{"reader_html":"<h1 class=\"chapter-heading\">Luke<span class=\"chapter-label\">Chapter 23<\/span><\/h1>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"1\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,1,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">1<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And the entire multitude of them, rising up, led him to Pilate.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"2\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,2,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">2<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Then they began to accuse him, saying, “We found this one subverting our nation, and prohibiting giving tribute to Caesar, and saying that he is Christ the king.”<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"3\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,3,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">3<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And Pilate questioned him, saying: “You are the king of the Jews?” But in response, he said: “You are saying it.”<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"4\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,4,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">4<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Then Pilate said to the leaders of the priests and to the crowds, “I find no case against this man.”<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"5\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,5,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">5<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">But they continued more intensely, saying: “He has stirred up the people, teaching throughout all of Judea, beginning from Galilee, even to this place.”<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"6\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,6,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">6<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">But Pilate, upon hearing Galilee, asked if the man were of Galilee.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"7\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,7,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">7<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And when he realized that he was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him away to Herod, who was himself also at Jerusalem in those days.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"8\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,8,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">8<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Then Herod, upon seeing Jesus, was very glad. For he had been wanting to see him for a long time, because he had heard so many things about him, and he was hoping to see some kind of sign wrought by him.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"9\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,9,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">9<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Then he questioned him with many words. But he gave him no response at all.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"10\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,10,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">10<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And the leaders of the priests, and the scribes, stood firm in persistently accusing him.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"11\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,11,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">11<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Then Herod, with his soldiers, scorned him. And he ridiculed him, clothing him in a white garment. And he sent him back to Pilate.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"12\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,12,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">12<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And Herod and Pilate became friends on that day. For previously they were enemies to one another.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"13\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,13,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">13<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And Pilate, calling together the leaders of the priests, and the magistrates, and the people,<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"14\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,14,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">14<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">said to them: “You have brought before me this man, as one who disturbs the people. And behold, having questioned him before you, I find no case against this man, in those things about which you accuse him.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"15\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,15,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">15<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And neither did Herod. For I sent you all to him, and behold, nothing deserving of death was recorded about him.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"16\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,16,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">16<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Therefore, I will chastise him and release him.”<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"17\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,17,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">17<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Now he was required to release one person for them on the feast day.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"18\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,18,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">18<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">But the entire crowd exclaimed together, saying: “Take this one, and release to us Barabbas!”<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"19\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,19,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">19<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Now he had been cast into prison because of a certain sedition that occurred in the city and for murder.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"20\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,20,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">20<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Then Pilate spoke to them again, wanting to release Jesus.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"21\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,21,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">21<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">But they shouted in response, saying: “Crucify him! Crucify him!”<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"22\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,22,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">22<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Then he said to them a third time: “Why? What evil has he done? I find no case against him for death. Therefore, I will chastise him and release him.”<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"23\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,23,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">23<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">But they persisted, with loud voices, in demanding that he be crucified. And their voices increased in intensity.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"24\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,24,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">24<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And so Pilate issued a judgment granting their petition.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"25\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,25,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">25<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Then he released for them the one who had been cast into prison for murder and sedition, whom they were requesting. Yet truly, Jesus he handed over to their will.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"26\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,26,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">26<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And as they were leading him away, they apprehended a certain one, Simon of Cyrene, as he was returning from the countryside. And they imposed the cross on him to carry after Jesus.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"27\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,27,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">27<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Then a great crowd of people followed him, with women who were mourning and lamenting him.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"28\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,28,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">28<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">But Jesus, turning to them, said: “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep over me. Instead, weep over yourselves and over your children.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"29\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,29,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">29<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">For behold, the days will arrive in which they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that have not borne, and the breasts that have not nursed.’<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"30\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,30,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">30<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall over us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"31\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,31,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">31<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">For if they do these things with green wood, what will be done with the dry?”<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"32\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,32,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">32<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Now they also led out two other criminals with him, in order to execute them.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"33\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,33,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">33<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And when they arrived at the place that is called Calvary, they crucified him there, with the robbers, one to the right and the other to the left.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"34\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,34,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">34<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them. For they know not what they do.” And truly, dividing his garments, they cast lots.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"35\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,35,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">35<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And people were standing near, watching. And the leaders among them derided him, saying: “He saved others. Let him save himself, if this one is the Christ, the elect of God.”<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"36\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,36,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">36<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And the soldiers also ridiculed him, approaching him and offering him vinegar,<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"37\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,37,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">37<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">and saying, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.”<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"38\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,38,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">38<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Now there was also an inscription written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"39\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,39,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">39<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And one of those robbers who were hanging blasphemed him, saying, “If you are the Christ, save yourself and us.”<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"40\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,40,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">40<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">But the other responded by rebuking him, saying: “Do you have no fear of God, since you are under the same condemnation?<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"41\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,41,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">41<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And indeed, it is just for us. For we are receiving what our deeds deserve. But truly, this one has done nothing wrong.”<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"42\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,42,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">42<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And he said to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"43\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,43,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">43<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And Jesus said to him, “Amen I say to you, this day you shall be with me in Paradise.”<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"44\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,44,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">44<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Now it was nearly the sixth hour, and a darkness occurred over the entire earth, until the ninth hour.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"45\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,45,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">45<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And the sun was obscured. And the veil of the temple was torn down the middle.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"46\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,46,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">46<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said: “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.” And upon saying this, he expired.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"47\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,47,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">47<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Now, the centurion, seeing what had happened, glorified God, saying, “Truly, this man was the Just One.”<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"48\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,48,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">48<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And the entire crowd of those who came together to see this spectacle also saw what had happened, and they returned, striking their breasts.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"49\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,49,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">49<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Now all those who knew him, and the women who had followed him from Galilee, were standing at a distance, watching these things.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"50\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,50,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">50<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And behold, there was a man named Joseph, who was a councilman, a good and just man,<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"51\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,51,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">51<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">(for he had not consented to their decision or their actions). He was from Arimathea, a city of Judea. And he was himself also anticipating the kingdom of God.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"52\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,52,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">52<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">This man approached Pilate and petitioned for the body of Jesus.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"53\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,53,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">53<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And taking him down, he wrapped him in a fine linen cloth, and he placed him in a tomb hewn from rock, in which no one had ever been placed.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"54\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,54,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">54<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And it was the day of Preparation, and the Sabbath was drawing near.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"55\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,55,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">55<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Now the women who had come with him from Galilee, by following, saw the tomb and the manner in which his body was placed.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"56\" onclick=\"loadParallel(2,3,23,56,&quot;Luke&quot;)\">56<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And upon returning, they prepared aromatic spices and ointments.
