onclick=\"loadParallel(3,5,29,1,&quot;Sirach&quot;)\">1<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">HE that sheweth mercy, lendeth to his neighbour: and he that is stronger in hand, keepeth the commandments.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"2\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,5,29,2,&quot;Sirach&quot;)\">2<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Lend to thy neighbour in the time of his need, and pay thou thy neighbour again in due time.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"3\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,5,29,3,&quot;Sirach&quot;)\">3<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Reap thy word, and deal faithfully with him: and thou shalt always find that which is necessary for thee.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"4\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,5,29,4,&quot;Sirach&quot;)\">4<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Many have looked upon a thing lent as a thing found, and have given trouble to them that helped them.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"5\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,5,29,5,&quot;Sirach&quot;)\">5<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Till they receive, they kiss the hands of the lender, and in promises they humble their voice:<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"6\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,5,29,6,&quot;Sirach&quot;)\">6<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">But when they should repay, they will ask time, and will return tedious and murmuring words, and will complain of the time:<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"7\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,5,29,7,&quot;Sirach&quot;)\">7<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And if he be able to pay, he will stand off, he will scarce pay one half, and will count it as if he had found it:<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"8\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,5,29,8,&quot;Sirach&quot;)\">8<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">But if not, he will defraud him of his money, and he shall get him for an enemy without cause:<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"9\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,5,29,9,&quot;Sirach&quot;)\">9<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And he will pay him with reproaches and curses, and instead of honour and good turn will repay him injuries.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"10\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,5,29,10,&quot;Sirach&quot;)\">10<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Many have refused to lend, not out of wickedness, but they were afraid to be defrauded without cause.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"11\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,5,29,11,&quot;Sirach&quot;)\">11<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">But yet towards the poor be thou more hearty, and delay not to shew him mercy.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"12\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,5,29,12,&quot;Sirach&quot;)\">12<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Help the poor because of the commandment: and send him not away empty handed because of his poverty.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"13\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,5,29,13,&quot;Sirach&quot;)\">13<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Lose thy money for thy brother and thy friend: and hide it not under a stone to be lost.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"14\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,5,29,14,&quot;Sirach&quot;)\">14<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Place thy treasure in the commandments of the most High, and it shall bring thee more profit than gold.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"15\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,5,29,15,&quot;Sirach&quot;)\">15<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Shut up alms in the heart of the poor, and it shall obtain help for thee against all evil.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"16\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,5,29,16,&quot;Sirach&quot;)\">16<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Better than the shield of the mighty, and better than the spear:<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"17\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,5,29,17,&quot;Sirach&quot;)\">17<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">It shall fight for thee against thy enemy.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"18\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,5,29,18,&quot;Sirach&quot;)\">18<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">A good man is surety for his neighbour: and he that hath lost shame, will leave him to himself.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"19\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,5,29,19,&quot;Sirach&quot;)\">19<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Forget not the kindness of thy surety: for he hath given his life for thee.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"20\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,5,29,20,&quot;Sirach&quot;)\">20<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">The sinner and the unclean fleeth from his surety.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"21\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,5,29,21,&quot;Sirach&quot;)\">21<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">A sinner attributeth to himself the goods of his surety: and he that is of an unthankful mind will leave him that delivered him.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"22\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,5,29,22,&quot;Sirach&quot;)\">22<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">A man is surety for his neighbour: and when he hath lost all shame, he shall forsake him.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"23\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,5,29,23,&quot;Sirach&quot;)\">23<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Evil suretyship hath undone many of good estate, and hath tossed them as a wave of the sea.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"24\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,5,29,24,&quot;Sirach&quot;)\">24<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">It hath made powerful men to go from place to place round about, and they have wandered in strange countries.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"25\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,5,29,25,&quot;Sirach&quot;)\">25<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">A sinner that transgresseth the commandment of the Lord, shall fall into an evil suretyship: and he that undertaketh many things, shall fall into judgment.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"26\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,5,29,26,&quot;Sirach&quot;)\">26<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Recover thy neighbour according to thy power, and take heed to thyself that thou fall not.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"27\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,5,29,27,&quot;Sirach&quot;)\">27<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">The chief thing for man&#039;s life is water and bread, and clothing, and a house to cover shame.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"28\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,5,29,28,&quot;Sirach&quot;)\">28<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Better is the poor man&#039;s fare under a roof of boards, than sumptuous cheer abroad in another man&#039;s house.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"29\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,5,29,29,&quot;Sirach&quot;)\">29<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Be contented with little instead of much, and thou shalt not hear the reproach of going abroad.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"30\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,5,29,30,&quot;Sirach&quot;)\">30<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">It is a miserable life to go as a guest from house to house: for where a man is a stranger, he shall not deal confidently, nor open his mouth.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"31\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,5,29,31,&quot;Sirach&quot;)\">31<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">He shall entertain and feed, and give drink to the unthankful, and moreover he shall hear bitter words.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"32\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,5,29,32,&quot;Sirach&quot;)\">32<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Go, stranger, and furnish the table, and give others to eat what thou hast in thy hand.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"33\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,5,29,33,&quot;Sirach&quot;)\">33<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Give place to the honourable presence of my friends: for I want my house, my brother being to be lodged with me.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"34\" onclick=\"loadParallel(3,5,29,34,&quot;Sirach&quot;)\">34<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">These things are grievous to a man of understanding: the upbraiding of houseroom, and the
