{"reader_html":"<h1 class=\"chapter-heading\">The Book of Psalms<span class=\"chapter-label\">Chapter 78<\/span><\/h1>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><span class=\"dropcap-wrap\" data-v=\"1\"><span class=\"dropcap\" title=\"Compare verse 1 across translations\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,1,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">G<\/span>ive ear, O my people, to my law: incline your ears to the words of my mouth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"2\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,2,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">2<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old:<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"3\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,3,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">3<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"4\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,4,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">4<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"5\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,5,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">5<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children:<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"6\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,6,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">6<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children:<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"7\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,7,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">7<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments:<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"8\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,8,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">8<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not stedfast with God.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"9\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,9,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">9<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">The children of Ephraim, being armed, and carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"10\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,10,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">10<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">They kept not the covenant of God, and refused to walk in his law;<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"11\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,11,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">11<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And forgat his works, and his wonders that he had shewed them.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"12\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,12,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">12<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Marvellous things did he in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"13\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,13,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">13<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">He divided the sea, and caused them to pass through; and he made the waters to stand as an heap.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"14\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,14,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">14<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">In the daytime also he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a light of fire.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"15\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,15,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">15<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">He clave the rocks in the wilderness, and gave them drink as out of the great depths.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"16\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,16,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">16<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">He brought streams also out of the rock, and caused waters to run down like rivers.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"17\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,17,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">17<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And they sinned yet more against him by provoking the most High in the wilderness.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"18\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,18,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">18<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And they tempted God in their heart by asking meat for their lust.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"19\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,19,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">19<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Yea, they spake against God; they said, Can God furnish a table in the wilderness?<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"20\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,20,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">20<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Behold, he smote the rock, that the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed; can he give bread also? can he provide flesh for his people?<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"21\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,21,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">21<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Therefore the LORD heard this, and was wroth: so a fire was kindled against Jacob, and anger also came up against Israel;<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"22\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,22,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">22<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Because they believed not in God, and trusted not in his salvation:<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"23\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,23,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">23<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Though he had commanded the clouds from above, and opened the doors of heaven,<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"24\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,24,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">24<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And had rained down manna upon them to eat, and had given them of the corn of heaven.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"25\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,25,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">25<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Man did eat angels&#039; food: he sent them meat to the full.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"26\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,26,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">26<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">He caused an east wind to blow in the heaven: and by his power he brought in the south wind.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"27\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,27,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">27<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">He rained flesh also upon them as dust, and feathered fowls like as the sand of the sea:<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"28\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,28,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">28<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And he let it fall in the midst of their camp, round about their habitations.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"29\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,29,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">29<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">So they did eat, and were well filled: for he gave them their own desire;<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"30\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,30,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">30<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">They were not estranged from their lust. But while their meat was yet in their mouths,<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"31\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,31,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">31<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">The wrath of God came upon them, and slew the fattest of them, and smote down the chosen men of Israel.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"32\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,32,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">32<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">For all this they sinned still, and believed not for his wondrous works.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"33\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,33,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">33<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Therefore their days did he consume in vanity, and their years in trouble.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"34\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,34,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">34<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">When he slew them, then they sought him: and they returned and enquired early after God.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"35\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,35,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">35<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And they remembered that God was their rock, and the high God their redeemer.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"36\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,36,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">36<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Nevertheless they did flatter him with their mouth, and they lied unto him with their tongues.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"37\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,37,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">37<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">For their heart was not right with him, neither were they stedfast in his covenant.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"38\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,38,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">38<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">But he, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity, and destroyed them not: yea, many a time turned he his anger away, and did not stir up all his wrath.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"39\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,39,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">39<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">For he remembered that they were but flesh; a wind that passeth away, and cometh not again.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"40\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,40,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">40<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">How oft did they provoke him in the wilderness, and grieve him in the desert!<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"41\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,41,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">41<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Yea, they turned back and tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"42\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,42,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">42<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">They remembered not his hand, nor the day when he delivered them from the enemy.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"43\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,43,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">43<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">How he had wrought his signs in Egypt, and his wonders in the field of Zoan.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"44\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,44,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">44<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And had turned their rivers into blood; and their floods, that they could not drink.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"45\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,45,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">45<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">He sent divers sorts of flies among them, which devoured them; and frogs, which destroyed them.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"46\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,46,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">46<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">He gave also their increase unto the caterpiller, and their labour unto the locust.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"47\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,47,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">47<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">He destroyed their vines with hail, and their sycomore trees with frost.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"48\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,48,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">48<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">He gave up their cattle also to the hail, and their flocks to hot thunderbolts.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"49\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,49,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">49<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">He cast upon them the fierceness of his anger, wrath, and indignation, and trouble, by sending evil angels among them.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"50\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,50,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">50<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">He made a way to his anger; he spared not their soul from death, but gave their life over to the pestilence;<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"51\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,51,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">51<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">And smote all the firstborn in Egypt; and was wroth with his inheritance.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"63\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,63,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">63<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">The fire consumed their young men; and their maidens were not given to marriage.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"verse-para\"><sup class=\"vnum\" data-v=\"64\" onclick=\"loadParallel(1,19,78,64,&quot;Psalms&quot;)\">64<\/sup><span class=\"vtext\">Their priests fell by the sword;
